Amityville horror. The first time that picture was shown was on the Merv Griffin show back in 1979. It was discovered 3 years after it was taken. Gene Campbell, who was a professional photographer, was brought into the house in 1976 when the Warrens went in with their team. He set up an automatic camera on the 2nd floor landing that shot off infrared film, black and white, throughout the night. There are literally rolls of film with nothing on them. There’s only one picture of the little boy.

Look at your left. You’ll see him.

The internet has many terrifying pictures, but above all, this one will always scare me even though I first saw it ages ago. The polar opposite of shock horror, this photo relies on the fear of unknown: what the fuck is that? It can’t be an artifact of film, the coincidence is too perfect. You can sit and dwell on it, and it just becomes scarier the more you think and try to explain it, which is horror done properly. Shitty modern horror that’s all about shocks and the surprise just startles you, with no time to think about why it’s messed up.
The best scary movies make you think about it, why it’s terrifying and holds you in that moment of uncertainty. “is the killer gonna pop out!?” Is…. close? But it’s not “oh my god, this child is writing “redrum” on the wall, wait, that’s murder backwards!! does he even know what that says?? Is he being controlled by something else? He can’t be, he’s still lucid, but where would he get that idea from? It must be his strange powers, or is it the hotel? Oh my god what the fuck is going on??” And your mind is still thinking and trying to rationalize. You’ve been captured, not just manipulated. Good horror is scary in the moment, but GREAT horror is terrifying and doesn’t allow you to leave!
Fuck I wanna make a proper horror movie one day.

…I’m getting goosebumps staring at this thing…
